Apryl Lee: Not-So-Adventurer

I am afraid of a lot of things. Top five: death by disease, the cats escaping the house, “thrill” rides, spiders, and flying. So, when one of my best friends said she was getting married, I knew we were going to have to get there somehow.

I love the idea of travel, of adventure, of seeing things and people, of taking in a moment of a place and a time, but my fear of flying has inhibited this sense of exploration.  When I do travel, I don’t travel well.  I’m the one with a cold, or a stomach thing, or a longing to go home.  I think this is just because I don’t travel enough.  I haven’t been many places.  Places I’ve been by plane:, Mexico, 2006, St. Lucia, 2005, London, 1999, St. Thomas, 1998, St. Thomas, 1997, Florida, 1991, Florida, 1985, Florida, 1981, California, 1975.  Places I’ve been by car (over 6 hrs. away): Florida, 1988, Chicago/Havana IL, 1999, Florida, 2000, Cana, VA, 2010.  I can remember, in detail, these trips. That’s what adventure does.  Stimulates and inspires, reorganizes, answer questions, makes decisions, sticks to your bones, under your nails, to your soul.  Maybe all this stimulation and stickiness, will chase out some of the fear.

14 states, 5,000 some-odd miles, 21 days, 42 Cliff Bars to get there, 52 hours on a train to get home.  I’m ready!

I’m with you on the spiders – Before I went to work this morning, I spent approximately 15 minutes trying to prod and pick up an earwig with a large twig 😦

Oh, those things! I have hated those things ever since my mom told me about the “Night Gallery” episode where the man had the earwig in his ear and it ate through his brain. She told me this when I was 10, and while I don’t really believe that they’ll eat through my brain, you never know.

Oh no! Eating through the brain? That sounds extremely inconvenient.

I’m visiting NYC in September and I’m developing growing concerns about roaches 😦 What would be even more terrifying is if it was like in films where when they walk they make sounds against the floorboards as if they are wearing high-heeled shoes. Like a “click click click click”.

Now that, my friend, would be the ultimate spider doom – Roaches in high heels. I’m sure that’ll never happen though…..
